Analyst Angle: Capital expenditures for buildout of 5G wireless technology driving M&A activity in the US telecommunications sector

Merger and acquisition activity in the U.S. technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) sector will be robust at least well into 2019, driven by several factors, indicating higher M&A valuation for companies in this sector.

Merger and acquisition activity in the global TMT sector reached an all time high of 3,389 deals last year following a decade of high volatility. However, worldwide M&A transactions in the TMT sector in 2017 were worth a combined US$498.2 billion, down 26.3 percent from US$676.3 billion in 2016, according to S&P Capital IQ, which also reported deal activity for Q2 2018 aggregated at US$395.8 billion.
