According to a report by Daisy Corporate Services, 63 percent of public sector IT decision-makers have noticed an increase in network security threats over the past 18 months. A staggering 71 percent identified cybersecurity as their primary networking challenge. With 85 percent of organizations attributing the rise in cyber threats to remote and hybrid working setups, it is clear that conventional security measures are no longer sufficient. The transition to newer, more efficient networking standards, such as WiFi 6, has been slow due to high upgrade costs. Only 20 percent of organizations have deployed WiFi 6 widely, and 45 percent have indicated that cost considerations have delayed their adoption. This slow transition further complicates efforts to streamline network infrastructure and enhance cybersecurity.

The Financial Strain and Legacy Systems

Although 96 percent of organizations believe that modernizing their network infrastructure will help them achieve their sustainability targets, disposing of legacy equipment in an environmentally responsible manner remains challenging for 68 percent. Organizations are caught in a cycle where substantial portions of their IT budgets, around 21 percent, are still being spent on maintaining legacy network hardware. This outdated equipment also undermines sustainability goals, as legacy hardware accounts for 27 percent of these organizations’ overall IT power consumption.The financial strain is exacerbated by the need to ensure robust cybersecurity while managing these legacy systems. As Joel Cunningham from Daisy pointed out, traditional security strategies like relying on remote employees to use VPNs are inadequate in this new working environment. The inefficiencies and lack of scalability involved in maintaining legacy systems make it difficult for public sector organizations to adapt to modern network security requirements. Furthermore, this reliance on outdated technology increases the vulnerability to sophisticated cyber threats, making the need for a more efficient and secure solution even more pressing.
